Crème de la Mer…not as special as you think?

According to an article in today’s Daily Mail UK the coveted anti-aging cream Crème de la Mer priced at about $865 US (although in my area it goes for about $925) only 5% of that is what the ingredients themselves cost, about $65. So whats the other $800 paying for? What makes this coveted cream so special? According to the researcher:
‘This is a variation on a basic water-in-oil formula,’ says Will. ‘What I’ve done is, of course, only an estimate. To give the benefit of the doubt, I’ve been very generous in my pricing of the sea kelp, which is the main ingredient.
‘Ultimately, of course, only the manufacturers know exactly what the recipe is, and how much their ingredients cost.’
The creators of this “miracle” cream Estee Lauder said that their formula was discovered by an aerospace physicist Dr. Max Huber. He created the formula after receiving bad burns to his face and hands and wanted to find a way to reduce his scarring. While the idea of adding oils and minerals to a cream back in the 70’s when it was first created may have seemed revolutionary but in 2010 that idea is fairly commonplace in creams found in the local drugstore. So why exactly is this cream so astronomicly expensive? Some suggest that Estee Lauder is just trying to trick the market, by making it so expensive it creates a desire of exclusivity that it can fulfill. Others say that Crème de la Mer uses only the finest ingredients stating:
La Mer uses nothing but ‘superb quality ingredients, and, in the case of the sea kelp, the cost reflects not only the raw materials but also the costs of helping maintain the ecosystem from which it comes by harvesting sustainably’….La Mer uses a special form of Californian sea kelp that is harvested just twice a year when it is at its most nutrient-rich, then shipped on ice to the Estee Lauder labs on the other side of the U.S., suppliers of skincare ingredients sell bio-fermented sea kelp for around £65 a litre
Regardless, all I know is that it may be expensive but I know plenty of women that have used every day anti aging creams and they don’t have skin nearly as beautiful as Jennifer Lopez or Marcia Cross (admitted users of the product). Now I’m not saying I’m going to go out and purchase myself a tub but I wouldn’t exactly protest if it was given to me…
